Women Build 2010
What is Women Build?
Women Build is a Habitat for Humanity International program that encourages women to make a difference by building homes and communities. Women Build not only provides a decent, affordable home to a family in need, it also provides an an environment in which women can feel comfortable learning construction skills while meeting and networking with other women.
When & Where?
Oklahoma City Councilwoman and Honorary Women Build Project Chair Meg Salyer led central Oklahoma women volunteers in building an entire home from the ground up in Hope Crossing over three weeks from June 11 through July 1—our 9th such project. Khalilah S. and her four children are so excited about how this healthy, energy efficient, affordable home will change their lives, reducing problems with asthma and providing her children with privacy, study space, and room to grow.
Why Women Build?
Women Build is designed to create a community of women dedicated to changing society for the better.
- In the United States alone, more than 12 million children - one out of every six - live in poverty.
- With a poverty rate of 14.0%, Oklahoma has the 13th highest poverty rate in the United States.
- One in ten families in the Oklahoma City area are living below the poverty limit – one in four if the householder is a single mother or grandmother raising children, as 60% of our homebuyers are.
