Midwest City
Working with the City of Midwest City has been a great experience for Central Oklahoma Habitat. The City leadership has been welcoming and helpful, and our families are excited
to be residents of that growing area. Habitat's first 10 Midwest City homes were constructed in 1999, one
of which became our first tornado home after our homebuyer lost her apartment and belongings to the May 3rd
storms that year.
The tornados definitely changed a lot of things - for a lot of people. One of the resulting changes was
that, by the end of 1999, Midwest City changed its minimum building restrictions to require
at least 1,200 square
feet, partial brick, and a one-car attached garage on all new construction. This was an adjustment for Habitat,
but a good one. Six of these brick and garage homes were finished for tornado families by the end of 1999
in the Meadow Oak Addition, and nine more were completed in the tornado-ravaged Crosby Addition in
2000 and 2001.
Habitat constructed 29 new homes during 2000, 2001, and 2002 in
Midwest City's Eastridge Addition, off NE 20th and Spencer
Road, and two more were built nearby on Justin Place, just
north of NE 10th Street on the east side of Spencer Road.
Our latest
Midwest City home was completed in the Chesser Addition, just
north of I-40 and west of Santa Fe, in 2002, bringing our total
Midwest City homes to 57.
We look
forward with anticipation to building more homes in Midwest
City!
