Longtime State of Oklahoma Employee Tyisha A. has wanted to buy her family a new home since her children were toddlers. Still, the financial analyst says she discovered the math didn’t add up for her family until she partnered with Habitat (COHFH).

“Owning a home is a desire that we all equally share within our household,” Tyisha stated in her COHFH New Home Construction program application. “My goal as a homeowner is to give my children a forever home. No matter how old they are and where life takes them, there will always be a road that leads back to home.”

Tyisha and her children, Taniya B., 20, a Redlands Community College student, and Antoine B., 17, a student and football player at Mustang High, will celebrate the dedication of their new home with Habitat staff, local clergy and community members at 2 p.m. TODAY (Dec. 12, 2024), at her new house in Cornerstone Creek in far northwest Oklahoma City.

In her application, Tyisha shared that, as her family’s primary provider, saving enough to pay for the closing costs and a down payment on a new home has been “very challenging to accomplish.” By partnering with Habitat and fulfilling the program’s requirements, the young mother won’t have to pay closing costs or make a down payment on her new Habitat home.

“Though my children are older now, they’re still living with me, and being a homeowner someday has always been the topic of discussion over dinner or when we spend family time together,” she stated. “I am looking forward to being a homeowner in a Habitat neighborhood with those who share some of the same similarities as being your average 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. workers with the desire to provide a safe and affordable place for our families to call home sweet home.”

Tyisha’s house will be Habitat’s 1,113th home built by Habitat since 1990. It is also near several other Habitat homeowners who also work for the state of Oklahoma. Cornerstone Creek is already a thriving community, with approximately 30 homes built or now under construction. As the community grows, it will offer 450 affordable homes, three parks with walking trails, workout stations, and a gazebo. Schoolchildren can also benefit from the excellent school district in Piedmont, Oklahoma.

COHFH is one of Habitat for Humanity International’s top 10 affiliates. Habitat’s New Home Construction program is designed to help qualified future homeowners buy a safe, secure, and energy-efficient new home for cost and without a down payment. Applicants who wish to apply with this program must meet specific qualifications to be considered, including having a credit score of more than 600 and the ability to make regular payments on an affordable mortgage. Applicants must also match the 2024 HUD annual income by family size guidelines for consideration.
