‘Country-Loving Grandmother’ Celebrates New Home
Described by her two grown daughters as a “country-loving Christian” mom and grandmother, Amanda H. celebrated her new home dedication on Dec. 5, 2024, at her new house located in Cornerstone Creek, Central Oklahoma Habitat’s latest and largest-ever affordable housing development in Central Oklahoma.
Amanda, a loving mother, grandmother, and dedicated travel coordinator for the Oklahoma Department of Health, received several housewarming gifts during her home dedication. They included a $50 gift certificate from Habitat ReStores, a $100 gift certificate from Supermercados Morelos and a gift bag from Malarkey Roofing Products Sales Representative Scott Curry.
She also received a new doormat from Edmond Board of Realtors Representative Lynne Beery, an engraved cutting board from Habitat Board Member/SWBC Mortgage Producing Branch Manager Dean Riddell and a newly engraved bible from The Order of the Daughters of the King Representative Sally Westfall from All Souls’ Episcopal Church in Oklahoma City. Mount Zion Methodist Church Pastor Timothy Stone later blessed Amanda’s new house.
The afternoon’s highlight came when Amanda accepted keys to her new home from Central Oklahoma Habitat’s Chair/CEO Ann Felton Gilliland, who led the event. Her face also lit up with a pleased smile when her new neighbor, Diamond W., arrived. Diamond, the first Cornerstone Creek homeowner, embraced Amanda warmly during the celebration.
Diamond said she and Amanda had bonded earlier while completing their 100 sweat-equity hours on Critical Home Repair program projects. She also described her own new home as a “winter wonderland” this Christmas.
“I’m in love!” Diamond said. “I’m enjoying it. We have candy canes everywhere! It’s amazing, and I’m thankful and grateful to welcome another homeowner to the family. I’m enjoying it!”
When Amanda applied to buy a home through Habitat, she stated that a new house would provide more space for her family and improve safety and security—all essential steps in helping her, her daughters and her grandchild feel more comfortable.
“Homeownership will also help with providing a loving place for my daughters and granddaughter to stay for extended periods of time while in Oklahoma,” Amanda stated. “Another goal homeownership will allow is to spend more time outside, whether walking around the neighborhood, gardening and more.”
Amanda’s new safe, secure, and energy-efficient house has plenty of room for her out-of-state children and grandchild to visit and stay. She recommends potential homeowners look into buying a Habitat home.
PRESS RELEASE CAPTION: (L-R): Diamond W., Central Oklahoma Habitat’s first Cornerstone Creek homeowner, dropped by Amanda H.’s new home dedication celebration on Dec. 5, 2024. Both employees of the state of Oklahoma met while completing their 100 sweat-equity hours on Habitat projects.
“There wasn’t much room where I lived before,” Amanda said. “I’d recommend people look into buying a Habitat home. It’s been a good experience.”
