Many people around the world celebrate Valentine’s Day by showing appreciation for those they care about; for others it can bring on feelings of loneliness and exclusion.
A common theme Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity’s (COHFH) Critical Home Repair (CHR) team hears from applicants is how lonely and hopeless they sometimes feel.
We believe a home should be a space providing protection, where someone can truly relax and find peace. Often when a home is in a state of disrepair, it becomes a source of stress and anxiety. Your commitment as a CHR volunteer reminds the people in our program that they are not alone. We hope we have shown our community such hopelessness can be overcome when we band together. For your contributions, we thank you. We continue to count you as our daily blessing!
The good news is that we are making a positive difference. To date, CHR has helped repair 626 homes. Last month, we focused on our outreach efforts, and we believe this can only lead to more opportunities to help families in critical need. And we’re determined to be proactive as a nonprofit. As a result, we are hiring a field supervisor to help expand and bolster our team. We’d also love to increase our volunteer numbers, so let’s all remain committed to spreading joy and support to our neighbors.
Instead of chocolate and dinner for a third Valentine’s Day in a row, please consider a volunteers’ date weekend! What could be better than a hands-on opportunity to impress your partner with your instruction, listening and building skills? Learn how well you work together and create impactful, powerful memories. You can gain a unique experience together while working to improve others’ lives.
Volunteer spots fill up quickly and are limited due to the size of the home being repaired. Volunteer slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so please call or sign-up online ASAP by contacting CHR Volunteer Coordinator Chris Hearn, at (405) 409-5557, or send him an email at Chris.Hearn@cohfh.org. If you have a group you’d like to bring, please call, and set up a date in advance.
We’re also looking for licensed professionals who would like to donate heat and air, plumbing, electrical and/or roofing services. Just call Chris at (405) 409-5557.

Olavon
The first project of this month is in Del City, Oklahoma. Olavon has lived in her home for 22 years and has struggled with home upkeep after having surgery on her shoulders, knees and wrists. We will be helping her with the front-entry and rear-patio door, roof repair, service her A/C, install new ceiling fans and will make some minor plumbing repairs to her bathroom. If you would like to learn or help in any way, click the link below and sign up. Olavon stated that the repairs will give her peace of mind and security, so she can focus on her health.
Elaine
The second week of February will also be in Del City. Elaine has lived in her home for 20 years. She has one daughter and five grandchildren. Elaine has worked with children for the last 34 years and loves every bit of it. She came to us for major electrical and plumbing repairs because everyday tasks like showering, washing dishes, and cleaning are difficult. We will also replace her front, back and side doors, install a kitchen faucet, four ceiling fans, new flooring, bath surround and vent in her bathroom. Come help us make Elaine feel more at home.
Shirley
During the third week of this month, our homeowner is in the northeast part of Oklahoma City, just east of the state capitol. Shirley and her daughter have been filling her home with memories and love for the past 44 years. Our work will be focused on three areas. On the exterior, we will be fixing and replacing siding and trim. In the bathroom, we will remove the tub and add a shower pan for better access, fix the subfloor and install new vinyl plank flooring. Lastly there is some minor electrical, such as new light switches and outlets. If you’re handy, please join us!
Vincent
CHR’s final week of February is in southwest Oklahoma City. This home belongs to Vincent, a veteran, who served 12 years in the U.S. Marine Corp with tours overseas. He’s lived here for the past 16 years. Without any family, Vincent has been unable to complete repairs needed on his home. This home needs the A/C unit repaired, as well as a replacement bathroom vanity top & faucet, kitchen sink faucet and front door.
