After living in a small apartment, Carlos and Daniela S., a father and daughter, teamed up and pooled their resources to partner with Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity (COHFH) and purchase a new house at Cornerstone Creek in northwest Oklahoma City.
The S. family, including Daniela’s mother and Carlos’s wife, Rosa G., celebrated their new home dedication with Habitat staff, local clergy, and community members on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025, at the house.
Carlos works as a sales lot porter for Metro Ford, and Daniela is an operations manager for a local CVS store. The family moved from El Salvador three years ago and learned about Habitat from a family member. During the celebration, the family received a gift certificate from COHFH’s ReStores, a new welcome mat, an engraved bible and a new cutting board. After receiving her family’s new house keys, Daniela S. said the new home means much more than just a roof over her family’s heads.
“It’s a miracle for our family,” Daniela said. “We came to this country only a few years ago, and it hasn’t always been easy. But God placed Habitat for Humanity in our path, and now we have a permanent place to call home. We are so grateful to everyone who made this possible.”
COHFH Chair/CEO Ann Felton Gilliland said the S. family is an excellent example of how families can collaborate and pool their incomes to achieve homeownership.
“This family’s ingenuity and partnership led to homeownership,” Felton Gilliland said. “They’re a great example of a family that partnered with us, put in the hard work and purchased an energy-efficient, affordable and high-quality home where they can build a new future.”
She said the S. family’s new house is Habitat’s 1,137th home built since 1990. Felton Gilliland also noted that Cornerstone Creek is on track to complete 91 homes in Phase I, with fundraising now underway for Phase II.
“We’re delighted by the progress we’re making at Cornerstone Creek,” she said. “Nevertheless, we still need the community’s help in raising the $3.7 million needed to pay for the infrastructure for Phase II’s 210 homes. Please remember, every dollar helps.”
