“God helps those who help themselves” may be an old saying, but it rings true for Ronald “Ron” N. Jr. and Patricia L. The couple, parents of four young children, needed a larger, stable home for their growing family—so they reached out to Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity (COHFH).

Tomorrow, at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, the family will celebrate the dedication of their new COHFH home alongside community members and local clergy at the new house in Cornerstone Creek.

Ron serves as director of Second Chance Sober Living, a spiritually based 12-step nonprofit that operates four safe, drug-free homes where people recovering from addiction can live while rebuilding their lives. Both he and Patricia work daily to support residents in maintaining sobriety and building stable futures.

“Our lives bring us joy that’s seldom experienced in any other field,” Ron said in his Habitat homeownership application. “I’ve poured many tears into making the business a success with God’s help and guidance. We were tired of renting and decided to stop throwing money away—to invest in our family’s future by buying our home through Habitat. We also need another bedroom, and renting a four-bedroom home is simply out of reach.”

To fulfill their 100-hour volunteer commitment to Habitat, members of Ron’s extended family joined him on site, working side by side with volunteers from EOG Resources Oklahoma City, the home’s corporate sponsor. EOG Resources volunteers contributed labor on seven consecutive Fridays during the build, including the first framing day on June 7, 2025.

“The people from EOG Resources were so nice and helpful,” Ron said. “Some even had construction experience, and I worked closely with them. I want to thank them and let them know how much we truly appreciate their help.”

Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity Chair/CEO Ann Felton Gilliland said tomorrow’s home dedication marks the 1,141st home built by Habitat since 1990. She also praised EOG Resources for its continued partnership and commitment to making affordable homeownership possible for families in Central Oklahoma.

“We feel so fortunate that EOG Resources Oklahoma City—and their parent company in Houston—chose to sponsor a Habitat home build in Cornerstone Creek,” Felton Gilliland said. “They’re an ideal corporate partner for Habitat, and their investment helps hardworking families achieve the goal of owning a new, energy-efficient, and affordable home.”

She added that more donors are needed to help fund the installment of the infrastructure needed for Phase II at Cornerstone Creek, which will allow Habitat to build 210 more affordable homes.

“Every little bit helps,” Felton Gilliland said.
