OKLAHOMA CITY — Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity (COHFH) celebrates a dual milestone TODAY: two families receiving the keys to their new homes at Cornerstone Creek, the largest and most ambitious affordable-housing development to date.
Two homeowners, Brett M. and the Amber W.-Taylor S. family, will celebrate side by side at one location beginning at 2 p.m. TODAY, Thursday, August 28, 2025. It will be held at the Amber W.-Taylor S. family residence in Cornerstone Creek.
Brett, 31, a senior program leader at Hope Is Alive Ministries who has been living in Mustang, Oklahoma, overcame a struggle with alcohol and has been sober for nearly six years. His journey to homeownership has been one of resilience and commitment.
“It’s not easy to qualify for a home,” Brett stated in his application. “I’ve worked hard to rebuild my credit and save money. Getting approved through Habitat would be a blessing—and I’m willing to volunteer for the rest of my life.”
Amber and Taylor are parents to an almost-4-year-old son. Taylor works as an IT analyst for INS Corporation. The couple applied to Habitat after being burdened by high rent that strained their budget and made it hard to plan for the future.
“Our current situation has been challenging, as we find ourselves juggling between managing daily expenses and ensuring that we can afford to pay our rent each month,” Taylor said. “The constant pressure of meeting these high costs leaves us with little room to invest in other areas, such as my partner’s education and saving for our child’s future. A Habitat home would provide us with the financial relief we desperately need.”
Both families were able to purchase their homes through Habitat’s New Home Construction.
COHFH Chair and CEO Ann Felton Gilliland said each family should have completed at least 100 hours of sweat equity, helping to build their own homes and those of others.
“These are the 1,135th and 1,136th homes we’ve built since 1990,” Felton Gilliland said. “Cornerstone Creek is growing quickly, and we’re on track to complete the 91 homes for Phase I.”
She said the long-term vision includes 450 affordable homes, three parks with workout stations and a gazebo, and access to Piedmont schools. But support is still needed. COHFH must raise $3.7 million to fund infrastructure for Phase II’s 210 homes.
“We’re building more than houses—we’re building futures,” said Felton Gilliland. “But we can’t do it without donors. Every dollar helps.”
