Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity will celebrate a special home dedication at the nonprofit’s Women-Build house with new homeowners, LaRhonda and Robin C., a mother-and-daughter duo, at 2 p.m. TODAY, August 28, 2024, at 3337 NE 21st Street in Oklahoma City.
Special guests will include Honorary Women Build Chair Vicki Behenna, the Oklahoma County district attorney, and some of her DA Office volunteers. Behenna is the first female Oklahoma County DA. She and her staff volunteers teamed up with Robin C. and other future homeowner volunteers on May 4, 2024, to help build the new Habitat home.
Oklahoma County District Attorney Vicki Behenna serves as the 2024 Women Build chair and helped construct the Women-Build house on May 4, 2024, in northeast Oklahoma City. On today, August 28, 2024, Behenna and some of her team will help the new homeowners celebrate their home dedication at 3337 NE 21st Street in Oklahoma City.

COHFH’s Women Build volunteers have helped construct homes for Habitat’s limited-income individuals and families in Central Oklahoma for over 20 years. Women Build volunteers are not limited just to women. Behenna’s husband, Scott, a retiree from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, and other men also volunteered.
Behenna believes projects like participating in the COHFH’s Women Build are important because they provide her and her team of legal eagles with opportunities to serve limited-income individuals and families in the greater Oklahoma City area. She said U.S. Census Bureau statistics from 2022 show that women and children in Oklahoma are more likely to be affected by poor-living conditions than men.
“In 2022, Oklahoma’s poverty rate is one of the highest in the country, with one in five Oklahoma children and one in 10 families living at or below the federal-poverty line,” Behenna said. “Habitat’s Women Build provides the opportunity to help build strength, independence and stability for these hard-working families through affordable homeownership.”
Behenna said she’s gratified that the 2024 Women Build house was bought by a woman-led household that includes three generations of one family – Robin, her mother, LaRhonda, and Robin’s son, Rashon, age 10. Robin is a secretary for the Mid-Del School district and LaRhonda is a floor clerk at a local hospital.
Robin stated in her Habitat application that her son, who has developmental disabilities, will benefit greatly from their new home.
“Having a Habitat home will take the anxiety of having a disabled child away,” Robin C. said. “It will allow my son to feel safe and free at the same time. Buying our own affordable home is perfect and was greatly needed for our situation.”
