How to Help Fund Homeownership with Habitat for Humanity

By COHFH Team

COHFH-Post-38

Homeownership is a vital step in achieving the American dream, but for limited-income people who struggle financially, home ownership remains just that – a dream.

Our mission at Central Oklahoma Habitat Affordable housing is one of the things Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity (COHFH) is to make that dream a reality for everyone. We are able to do this only through the generosity of businesses, foundations, civic groups and individuals who support efforts with their money and time. We receive no government or United Way support or any other regular funding for our program.

If you’re interested in supporting Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity, here’s how you can help:

Donate Your Time

Are you looking for an opportunity to offer your talents to a good cause? Consider volunteerism. Every time you help build, rebuild or assist with home repairs, you join further our mission to help families establish a home of their own. Volunteers can help build homes, work in the office, help at the ReStores, or serve on a committee – whatever best fits their time and preference. Volunteers like you can make the difference for Oklahoma families in need of decent, affordable homes. We provide all needed instruction, tools and safety gear. The only skill you need to bring to the worksite is the desire to make a difference.

Financial Gifts

A major misconception about Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity is that the government has a hand in funding the program. Nonprofit organizations such as ours always have monetary needs – it is what keeps us going. Without financial donations, we become very limited in the number of people we can help.

Charitable giving also qualifies as a tax deduction. It can be cash, set up in a special account, and taken from your life insurance or retirement fund. Since this kind of giving can be set up in several ways, we suggest you always seek the advice of a tax professional.

Shop or Donate Something to Our ReStores

The Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity operates two local ReStores that sells new home improvement supplies, gently-used items such as furniture and appliances, and a wide variety of other items, as prices that are literally a fraction of what you’d pay elsewhere. All purchases go directly to our building fund, to allow us to continue providing homes to deserving Oklahoma families. If you’d rather shop from the comfort of your living room, you can visit our eBay store, https://www.ebay.com/str/Oklahoma-Habitat-ReStore.

You can also donate your old items in good condition and get a tax deduction. For larger items, we have a convenient, free pick up service that you can schedule.

Don’t Sell Your Car, Donate It

Did you know that we take car donations as well? Each car donated is one more home COHFH can help build. And your gift is also fully tax deductible.

To donate a car, truck, boat or RV to Central Oklahoma Habitat’s official car donation program – call 405-232-4828 or visit http://www.habitat.org/carsforhomes/ and let us take care of the rest. It’s a convenient, generous way to support our mission.
