KFOR Channel: Local Roofing company donates 500th roof to Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Several lucky families will have roofs over their head thanks to the Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity (COHFH) and their donors. The shingles for those homes have been donated by a roofing company over the past 12 years and recently, they donated their 500th roof.
For the Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity, it’s all about building home sweet home’s for those who need it one piece of material at a time. Right now they’re building in a neighborhood near Morgan Road and NW 150th Street. There will be about 450 homes in the Cornerstone Creek neighborhood when all is said and done.
“It’s so wonderful for families,” COHFH CEO Ann Felton Gililand said.
For one home in particular, it’s very special. Malarkey Roofing Products makes shingles right here in Oklahoma City and a home being built there marks their 500th donation to the organization.

“We want to become part of our community and give back to our community,” Malarkey Roofing Products VP of Quality Nancy Teague said.
Recently, their crews and volunteers came out to frame it. The roof will go on in about a month using impact resistant shingles.

“So they get a large percentage off on their insurance as well,” Gililand said.
Teague said she’s seen the shingles work for herself after a hail storm hit her dad’s home.

“I had to go down and deal with the insurance company and he walked the roof and asked me, ‘what are these?” she said. “’I’ve totaled every house in this
neighborhood, but this one. All you have is a few pieces that are damaged.’”

Since 2012, they’ve donated about $2 million in shingles. Every house in the neighborhood has shingles from Malarkey. Gililand said the help is a blessing in what she calls a continuing fight to fix a national crisis for affordable housing in the country.

“We couldn’t do what we do without our great volunteer manpower and our donors,” she said.

The dedication is the next phase where the family will get the keys to their new place when it’s done. Gilliland said they even provide some lawn care equipment for them as well.
