OKLAHOMA CITY — While Heather M. spends her days helping monitor patients’ brain activity at OU Health, the mother of three struggled to find a safe, affordable home for her family before turning to Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity.

Fortunately, Heather applied to Habitat’s New Home Construction program, fulfilled the program’s requirements, and will celebrate the purchase of her new home at 2 p.m. TODAY, May 28, in Cornerstone Creek in far northwest Oklahoma City.

As a single mother of three, Heather wrote in her Habitat application that she never expected that finding a safe, affordable home would become one of the biggest challenges facing her family.

“Finding and affording a home in a safe area has been difficult since housing costs have risen so steeply,” Heather stated. “Having a quality, affordable home for my children and myself will offer me the security to continue my education and feel a sense of accomplishment.”

She said that volunteering alongside Habitat staff and other volunteers during her 100 sweat-equity hours reinforced the importance of community and service.

“I work in health care, building and volunteering with Habitat has been a gift,” Heather said. “Watching the process of helping each other is so inspiring.”

Habitat Chair/CEO Ann Felton Gilliland said Heather’s story reflects the growing housing crisis facing many working families across Oklahoma, including highly trained professionals in essential fields such as health care.

“Heather’s story shows why our mission at Habitat matters so deeply right now,” Felton Gilliland said. “She is a hardworking mother in a highly skilled healthcare profession, yet finding a safe, decent and affordable home for her children was still a challenge. Families like Heather’s are the reason we build in central Oklahoma.

“Our homeowners are doing their part, and with the help of our partners, donors and volunteers, Habitat provides the opportunity to build strength, stability and a better future through homeownership. Heather did everything right — worked hard, built a career, and kept moving forward — we simply helped bridge the gap.”
