Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity plans to top off a special Habitat home dedication at 2 p.m. TODAY at Cornerstone Creek in Oklahoma City. The event not only celebrates the home dedication, but it also earmarks the 500th roof covered in Malarkey Roofing’s high-quality shingles.

COHFH Chair/CEO Ann Felton Gilliland said this is Habitat’s 1,133rd Habitat house built since 1990. She praised Malarkey Roofing Products for their longtime partnership and for donating more than $2 million worth of high-quality shingles since its Oklahoma City plant opened in 2012.

“This home dedication not only celebrates the fact that Julie Q. has become a new homeowner, but it also earmarks an important milestone in the history of Malarkey Roofing and COHFH’s long partnership. Not only is Malarkey Roofing the home-build sponsor, but it is also the 500th Habitat house covered by Malarkey’s Class 4 hail-resistant shingles. We couldn’t ask for a better partner as we work to build affordable housing communities in Central Oklahoma.”

Malarkey Roofing Products President Dale Rushing said he’s proud of his company’s partnership with Habitat.

“It always makes me very proud to see a freshly installed Malarkey roof, of course, but this one – our 500th with the Habitat – is especially heartwarming because of our team’s connection to the cause,” Rushing said.

Malarkey Vice President of Manufacturing Jay Kreft said that company employees often volunteer during their time off to help build homes with Habitat.

“Members of our team here have volunteered their own time to frame walls and help with construction at Habitat’s building sites,” Kreft said. “In the plant, we have worked together to provide high-performance, sustainable roofing products for all 500 Habitat homes and many more roofs across Oklahoma and the country.”

A professional roofing crew roofed the new house with 30 squares of Malarkey Vista weathered wood-plus shingles. New Habitat Homeowner Julie Q. once struggled with alcohol and drug addiction but has been sober for the past seven years thanks to Hope Is Alive (HIS) Ministries. She said she was so impressed with the ministry that she began working for them in Program Leadership and Development.

“Having this home means the world to me,” Julie said. “If you had told me I’d be buying my own brand-new home seven years later, I would have thought you were crazy! I never thought something like this would be possible. It just goes to show you that hard work and strong faith pay off. This wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for nonprofits like Habitat that look beyond my past mistakes and look at the person I am now. I am truly grateful.”
