OKLAHOMA CITY —Dozens of Oklahoma City officers and employees spent their Friday working to build a home that will house a family in need of affordable housing.
Working in the new affordable housing development from Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity, officers traded their guns and badges for hammers and nails.
“Everyone is here with one goal and purpose, and it takes us back to our purpose, our why. Our sole purpose in life is to help people,” said Oklahoma City police Chief Ron Bacy.
More than 40 officers served the community in a different way Friday by building a home from the ground up. The home is part of the growing Cornerstone Creek neighborhood.
The neighborhood, near Northwest 150th Street and Morgan Road, will be the site of more than 400 affordable homes, the largest affordable housing development project in the history of Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity.
“For us, we respond to the worst circumstances on any given day, but the ability to give back and be the foundation for the start of a wonderful life for someone is invaluable and enriches everyone,” Bacy said.
The involvement of local officers is part of the Faith & Blue Weekend, a nationwide event for law enforcement and faith-based organizations to bridge gaps and connect with their communities.
“We know that building a house like this will change that family’s life, and if we change that family’s life, then we know that generations to come will also be changed,” said Lt. Fernando Hernandez, with the Oklahoma City Police Department.
