Hinano & Shelby H.

Homeowner #1088 – A young married couple, Shelby and Hinano H., celebrated their home dedication with Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity (COHFH) staff, community members and the couple’s families on Nov. 16, 2023, at their new home in Blanchard, Oklahoma. Shelby is studying to become a nurse and Hinano serves in the U.S. Army.

Hinano learned a great deal about building a house and home-repair skills while fulfilling the couple’s 100 required sweat-equity volunteer hours prior to buying their new Habitat home. He said family members also helped the pair by volunteering and fulfilling some of the needed sweat-equity hours int he couple’s stead.

“It was a fun experience though,” Hinano said. “I got to learn how to put up a frame on a house, and whatnot. Overall, it was a great experience!”

Toward the end of the home dedication, COHFH Chair/CEO Ann Felton Gilliland gave Shelby a hug after she handed the couple the new keys to their safe and affordable new home. Hinano then stepped forward and addressed the guests.

“Thank you all, and thank you, Habitat,” he said. “Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.”
