Mother of Four Celebrates Stability of ‘Forever’ Habitat Home

After moving 15 times in 20 years, MoNica W. was ready to put down roots.

The mother of four sons applied to purchase a new Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity (COHFH) home after years of facing rising rents, limited affordable housing options and frequent moves.

“By the grace of God, obtaining a Habitat home will give us the stability needed to focus on other things, like my boys’ educations and careers,” MoNica wrote in her application. “Raising four boys is a challenge, and teaching them how to be upstanding, empathetic individuals and responsible adults is my ultimate goal.”

MoNica works as an engineering assistant I for the City of Oklahoma City. She said she had prepared herself for homeownership by improving her finances and taking the steps needed to care for a home successfully.

“Having a safe and comfortable home will allow my sons and me to have the financial freedom to invest in other important opportunities, like different schools, greater exposure to colleges and sports opportunities,” she wrote.

After being accepted into COHFH’s New Home Construction program, MoNica eagerly completed 100 hours of sweat equity by helping build her home and the homes of other Habitat families. She especially enjoyed helping frame a wall.

MoNica, her sons, COHFH staff and community members celebrated the dedication of Central Oklahoma Habitat’s 1,099th home on June 20, 2024, in Spencer, Oklahoma.

Throughout her journey to homeownership, MoNica said she wanted her children to understand the value of hard work, prayer and patience.

“It’s a dream come true,” MoNica said. “It is an absolutely amazing feeling having the keys to a home that I own. It means no more worrying about landlords, deposits or applications—it’s a forever home for me and my family, and I absolutely couldn’t ask for more!”

COHFH Chair and CEO Ann Felton Gilliland praised MoNica’s determination.

“We’re delighted MoNica has completed our program,” Felton Gilliland said. “She worked hard to fulfill all the requirements necessary to buy her Habitat home. It is a joy to celebrate this accomplishment with her and her family.”
