Family From Cameroon Builds New Future Through Habitat Homeownership

More than six years before purchasing a home with his family in 2025, Pierre L. left the Republic of Cameroon in Central Africa. He came to the United States seeking new opportunities. The soft-spoken, devout Catholic settled in Oklahoma City after finding work in Oklahoma County law enforcement.

Pierre worked hard and saved money before reuniting with his wife, Annette, in 2021. After joining her husband, Annette found work as a nursing assistant at a local nursing home. Their son, Yvan, began attending school in Oklahoma City.

The family wanted to purchase a house but found few affordable homes on the market. After a friend told them about Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity’s (COHFH) New Home Construction program, they decided to apply.

In the family’s New Home Construction program application, Yvan, then 13, described his family as “very respectful” and shared that they attended St. Eugene Catholic Church in Oklahoma City.

On Jan. 16, 2025, Pierre, Annette and Yvan celebrated purchasing their new, energy-efficient and affordable home during a dedication at Cornerstone Creek in far northwest Oklahoma City.
