Achieving a ‘Bigger Dream’ with Habitat Homeownership

Gabriel G. and his mother, Margarita, celebrated an important milestone on Feb. 27, 2025, when they joined Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity (COHFH) staff and community members for the dedication of Gabriel’s new home at Cornerstone Creek.

The seventh of 10 children, Gabriel remembered growing up happily in Durango, Mexico, before leaving his home country in search of new opportunities.

“I left my home in search of a better future and to fulfill the dreams that everyone has in life,” Gabriel said.

After moving to Oklahoma City, Gabriel worked in factories before pursuing a career in cosmetology. Although he enjoyed the field, he felt something important was missing.

“Something was missing — the ability to be with my family, especially my mom,” Gabriel said.

Gabriel reunited with his family about six years before purchasing his home. By 2025, he was working as an assembler at Balon Corp., a job that provided greater financial stability. Determined to continue building his future, he also pursued his GED while working toward homeownership.

“That’s why I’m here — to achieve one more dream, a bigger dream — my new house,” Gabriel said. “I know I’m in the best and most trusted hands with Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity.”

His dedication marked the purchase of a new, energy-efficient and affordable home where he could remain close to his family.
