Sometimes a Big Sis Does Know Best

A big sister sometimes knows best. That’s what John L. of Edmond believed after taking his older sister Emilia’s advice to apply for Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity’s (COHFH) New Home Construction program.

“My sister told me about Habitat,” John said. “I decided to give it a try. I have always listened to her, and she has always been right.”

After earning an economics degree in the Republic of Cameroon, John lived with his sister and her family for several years.

“It was a little overcrowded with me there, so I thought applying was a great idea,” John said.

At the time of his home dedication, John had worked for more than two years as a certified nursing assistant at Veraden Senior Living in Edmond. He also was considering starting a family of his own.

“I feel it will be a perfect way for me to start a decent and happy life,” John said. “Homeownership will significantly impact my life and my family, especially regarding stability.”

John’s family joined him on March 27, 2025, to celebrate the dedication of his new, energy-efficient and affordable home at Cornerstone Creek. He moved into the home with his nephew, Jeffrey, then 10.
