Father’s Advice Leads Mechanical Engineer to Habitat Homeownership

Sometimes listening to your parents pays off—a life lesson Jose F.M. will not soon forget.

After earning his mechanical engineering degree from the University of Oklahoma in 2023, Jose remembered his father’s encouragement to consider Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity’s (COHFH) New Home Construction program.

Jose had balanced his university studies with jobs at a local golf and country club. After graduating and beginning his career as a mechanical engineer, he followed his father’s advice and applied to Habitat’s homebuyer program.

Eight months later, Jose celebrated purchasing his new, energy-efficient and affordable home during a June 26, 2025, dedication at Cornerstone Creek in Oklahoma City.

“Now, eight months later, I’m a homeowner, and I’m very grateful and blessed,” Jose said as he held the keys to his new home.

Jose encouraged other prospective homebuyers to learn more about Habitat and its path to affordable homeownership.

“Habitat takes a tremendous load off your shoulders,” he said. “If you don’t know about Habitat, look it up—it’s a great program.”

Then, with a laugh, Jose shared the next milestone he hopes to reach.

“Now that I have my home, it’s time to start a family.”
