When Affordable Rent Disappeared, Hollie C. Created a New Path

For Hollie C., single mother, stability slipped away after the loss of her longtime landlord. For 13 years, he had kept her rent affordable because, as Hollie wrote in her Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity application, “he knew money was tight.” After his death, she faced a difficult new reality: comparable rents were nearly double what she had been paying, putting a safe, affordable home for her family out of reach.

Hollie had once considered buying a home, but the only options within her budget were in poor condition. She also explored Habitat homeownership but didn’t quite qualify. Determined, Hollie set out to change her future. She persevered, earned a cybersecurity degree, and secured a promotion at LexisNexis—steady steps that brought long-term stability within reach.

On Sept. 19, 2026, Hollie stood alongside her children, Kayla and Brock, at a dual-home dedication in Cornerstone Creek. With them was her new neighbor, Shy A., and her daughter, Ke’zira, as both families marked the beginning of new chapters as homeowners.

“Becoming a homeowner means not being at the mercy of future rent hikes,” Hollie said. “It has relieved my fears and given me hope for the future.”
Kayla is now finishing high school in a stable environment. For Hollie, it means something just as powerful: her family finally has a place to call home—and the confidence to move forward.

“We’re so thankful for all the volunteers and donors who have made homeownership possible for us in a beautiful new house,” Hollie said.
