After Seven Moves, Shy A. Finds Lasting Stability

For Shy A., a hardworking single mother and housekeeper for the Oklahoma House of Representatives, a Sept. 19, 2025, dual-home dedication held by Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity (COHFH) marked a milestone years in the making.

Originally from Oklahoma, Shy spent several years in Texas to be near her sons before returning in 2017. After her return, she and her daughter moved repeatedly in search of affordable housing, but rising rental costs made long-term stability a challenge. Shy’s experience reflects a broader reality across Central Oklahoma, where housing costs have outpaced affordable options for many working families.

Still, Shy remained focused on one goal: homeownership through Habitat’s New Home Construction program. That commitment culminated in her celebrating the dedication of her new Habitat home alongside her new neighbor, Hollie C., during their shared home dedication at Cornerstone Creek.

During the celebration, Shy thanked Jesus and COHFH Chair/CEO Ann Felton Gilliland for “this beautiful and amazing program,” before reflecting on how long the dream had stayed with her.

“All my life, I saw you on TV, and I always wanted to be in the program,” Shy said. “I didn’t know how, but I knew one day it would be my dream.”

She also thanked those who supported her along the way, including her Catholic family, Habitat’s construction crew and Family Services.

“Thank you for always supporting me, standing by me, lifting me, building me, and encouraging me,” she said.

Shy added that her “amazing daughter,” Ke’zira, gave her the courage to pursue homeownership.

“I’m glad that one of our dreams has come true,” she said.
