U.S. Navy Veteran Family ‘Loves Every Part’ of New Home

U.S. Navy Veteran Nathan F. served his country for nearly 10 years before selling his home and moving with his family from Wichita, Kansas, to Oklahoma several years ago. Although he and his wife, Laura F., soon found jobs, they also discovered that buying an affordable home was challenging in today’s high-priced housing market.

Fortunately, Nathan and his wife applied for help through Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity’s New Home Construction program, and are now the owners of a lovely new and energy-efficient home at Cornerstone Creek, Habitat’s newest and largest affordable housing development in far northwest Oklahoma City.

Nathan F. wrote that finding an affordable home had been difficult since he separated from the military.

“As we expand our family, we’d love to be in a safe area,” Nathan F. stated. “The assurance that we own a home that is in good condition will help set our family’s mind at ease and help set a steady foundation.”

After their home dedication, the young parents said their favorite part of participating in the Habitat program was helping to frame their future home and volunteering for the nonprofit’s Critical Home Repair program.

“Through Critical Home Repair, we helped others in similar, yet different situations from our own,” Nathan said. “Helping those in need was rewarding, and I felt a sense of accomplishment. We also enjoyed working with the other Habitat families here (at Cornerstone Creek) – there’s a nice community feel here.”

He said he is grateful to Habitat for being able to participate in the New Home Construction program, including being able to select the pattern of brick and
colors in the home. “We love everything about it,” Nathan said. “It has been a very wonderful experience, and we’ve had a lot of support.”
