OK Habitat for Humanity leader reflects on Carter’s contribution

Dear friends,

The recent passing of our 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who died at the age of 100 just two days before the arrival of the new year, marks a significant milestone not only in the history of Habitat International but for our nation as a whole. President Carter and Mrs. Carter both leave behind an amazing legacy as selfless humanitarians and servant leaders who helped to bring worldwide prominence to Habitat’s mission and to the critical need for affordable housing through the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project.

I remember more than 30 years ago when I first served on the Board of Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity, President and Mrs. Carter were already well-established as partners with Habitat International and well-recognized and admired as tireless volunteers, advocates and fundraisers for our Christian-housing ministry. We watched along with the world as they both readily picked up hammers and devoted much of their lives to building safe, decent and affordable housing for people in need both in the U.S. and around the world.

Together, the Carters leave a legacy of compassion, dignity and grace through their incredible partnership and service to Habitat. They were truly a blessing. We hope you will join us in prayers for President Carter and his family during this time of reflection and appreciation for a remarkable life well-lived that improved the lives of countless people worldwide.

Blessings,

Ann Felton Gilliland
Chair/CEO
