Central Oklahoma Habitat celebrates a defining milestone with two home dedications at Cornerstone Creek
Two families reached a defining milestone on Thursday, August 28, 2025, as Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity (COHFH) celebrated a dual home dedication at Cornerstone Creek in Oklahoma City.
Newly engaged, Brett M., 31, a senior program leader at Hope Is Alive (HIA) Ministries, became a first-time homeowner. Clean and sober for more than five years, Brett said he is grateful for the opportunity after once being turned down for housing.
“If you’d told me 10 years ago that I would be sitting here buying a house, I would have told you that you were crazy,” Brett said. “What God has done in my life, and what Habitat has allowed me to do by giving people like me a chance, is phenomenal.”
Amber W. and Taylor S., who are raising their almost-4-year-old son, also became homeowners that day. Taylor, an IT analyst for INS Corporation, said high rent had strained their budget and limited their ability to save for the future.
In their application for COHFH’s New Home Construction program, Taylor wrote:
“We are juggling between managing daily expenses and ensuring that we can afford to pay our rent each month. The constant pressure of meeting these high costs leaves us with little room to invest in other areas, such as my partner’s education and saving for our child’s future. A Habitat home would provide us with the financial relief we desperately need.”
After the young couple received the keys to their home, Taylor said they are grateful for the opportunity to buy their new Habitat home.
Both dedications were led by COHFH Chair/CEO Ann Felton Gilliland, with house blessings performed by Deacon John Teague of St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in Yukon. The two homes are Habitat’s 1,135th and 1,136th since 1990. Felton Gilliland noted that Cornerstone Creek is on track to complete 91 homes in Phase I, with fundraising now underway for Phase II.
“Today marks a defining milestone for Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity,” Felton Gilliland said. “COHFH must also raise $3.7 million to fund infrastructure for Phase II’s 210 homes. We’re building more than houses — we’re building futures. But we can’t do it without donors. Every dollar helps.”
