Purple is fast moving to dominate color palettes this year and this should not be a shock as purple hues have popped up in virtually every major brand redesign this year.
Back in 2014, Pantone had already released fuchsia/purple dreams selecting Radiant Orchid as Color of The Year. Still, nothing could have prepared the color community for PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet: a galactic, deep purple shade that is about to take the world of design by storm. In words used by the Pantone team, “Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
What Purple Represents
Colors can evoke emotions and purple, in particular, is often linked to terms like soothing, exciting, and relaxation. In a study on fashion brand personality, purple logos were significantly associated with sophistication, including traits like “feminine,” “glamorous,” and “charming.” With a sense of mystic and royal qualities, purple is a color often well liked by very creative or eccentric types and embodies the balance of red’s stimulation and blue’s calm.
The Pantone team continues to explain that their color selection is, “complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.”
The color purple is a rare occurring color in nature and as a result, is often seen as having sacred meaning. Lavender, orchid, lilac, and violet flowers are considered delicate and precious. The color purple has a variety of effects on the mind and body, including uplifting spirits, calming the mind and nerves, enhancing the sacred, creating feelings of spirituality, increasing nurturing tendencies and sensitivity, and encouraging imagination and creativity.
